Light and comfort Meal: Thattu Dosa

Thattu dosa is a popular street food in Kerala, a state located in the southern region of India. It is a small-sized dosa that can easily fit into the palm of your hand, unlike the larger-sized dosas . The name ‘Thattu dosa’ is inspired by ‘Thattu Kada’, which refers to street-side eateries in Kerala. The difference between the common dosa and thattu dosa lies in the fact that the latter isn’t as crispy but is feathery-soft, making it an ideal choice for a light and comforting meal.

The preparation of thattu dosa involves making a fermented batter of rice and lentils, which is then poured onto a hot griddle and cooked until it turns soft and fluffy. Unlike the traditional dosa, thattu dosa is cooked on a low flame to ensure that it doesn’t become too crispy. The result is a dosa that is light and airy, making it the perfect accompaniment to a range of delicious chutneys and side dishes.

One of the most popular accompaniments to thattu dosa is creamy coconut chutney, which is made by blending fresh coconut, roasted chana dal, green chillies, and a few other spices. Another popular side dish is tangy and slightly spicy red chilli chutney, which is made by blending red chillies, garlic, and tamarind.

At Amma’s South Indian Restaurant, thattu dosa is served with any one of these side dishes as per the choice of the customer:

Veg Kurma , a delicious and flavorful side dish made with a medley of vegetables cooked in creamy coconut-based gravy. The vegetables used in the kurma can vary, but typically include potatoes, carrots, peas, beans, and cauliflower. The kurma is mildly spiced and has a slightly sweet taste.

Egg Kurma or Egg Thokku , a spicy and flavorful dish made with boiled eggs and a blend of aromatic spices. The eggs are boiled and then sautéed with a mix of onions, tomatoes, and spices to create a rich and tangy gravy.

Chicken Kurma, a creamy and delicious side dish made with succulent chicken pieces cooked in flavorful coconut-based gravy. The dish is mildly spiced and has a subtle sweetness to it.

Mutton Kurma, a rich and hearty side dish made with tender mutton pieces cooked in luscious coconut-based gravy. The dish is spicy and flavorful.

Meen Kuzhambu, a tangy and spicy fish curry made with tamarind and a blend of aromatic spices. The dish is full of flavor and has a unique sourness to it due to the tamarind.
